Create a Website in NZ

Everything you need to know about how to build a website in New Zealand

Creating a website may seem like a daunting task, so let us break it down for you.

There are two things that you need in order to have a website. A Domain Name and Web Hosting. These are ongoing subscrptions fees that allow your website to 'live' on the internet.

Now, you'll need to decide whether you will go the route of either:

  • using a DIY website builder
  • or hiring a website designer

While you may think hiring a website designer is not necessary, or too expensive, there are some things to consider.

Using a DIY Website Builder

For example, DIY builder Wix costs $17 NZD ($11 US Dollars) per month, which is $204 NZD per year, plus a domain name for around $33 NZD. That's $237 NZD. Then, if you want a business email address, that's around another $9 per month.
So in total, you end up paying $345 NZ Dollars a year, just for your Domain and Web Hosting if you use the WIX website builder. That's not cheap!

This is in comparison to hiring a web designer where you can use your own domain/hosting provider, which only costs $150-$200 per year, after paying your designer their one-off design fee.

And we're not done yet - because if you are using a DIY builder then that also means YOU have to create the website yourself. Now, Wix is a drag-and-drop editor, which means that you do not need to be able to code in order to create a website on their platform. However, you still need to spend time designing the website and adding all your content. Not to mention, Wix's DIY builder can be quite finicky to use, especially if you are wanting to make very precise changes, as well as trying to make it responsive for mobiles and tablets.

That's a lot to take in. Now, let's look at how to create a website if you choose to use a website designer instead.

Hiring a website designer to create a website

Design fee:

This is the cost you pay your website designer for building the website for you and adding your page content. Prices vary, and generally designers charge around $1000 for a basic website. However, at Digital Candy we have affordable websites packages from $350-$600. Plus, we give you the ability to edit your website content yourself, with our simple content management system.

Domain and Hosting:

All websites require a domain name and web hosting. A domain name is your web address which normally ends in .co.nz. Hosting is where your website files that create the website are stored. Prices range from around $150-$200 per year (around $33 for the domain, and the rest is the hosting fee). It is best to choose a Web Host that has servers located in either NZ or Aus for faster website speed. Check with your web designer on whether their package includes a domain/hosting subscription, as some include 12 months free in their packages. At Digital Candy, we include 12 months free if you use our provider, but we also give you the freedom to choose your own Host if you prefer.
