Wix is a popular choice for creating websites as it allows anyone to build a website without needing to know how to code. However, here are some things you should know about Wix before you create a site on the Wix platform.
Pricing
Hosting Subscription Fee
Wix's subscription fee for their basic plan costs around $204 NZD per year ($17 per month). Remember they charge in US Currency, so we need to convert it to NZ Dollars.
Domain Name
For .com domains, they offer a one year free domain name, but after the first year, you will also need to pay the domain fee, which is around $33 NZD.
However, Wix does not currently support purchasing New Zealand domains (ending in .co.nz), so you won't be eligible for their free offer and will have to purchase it elsewhere.
Total Wix Cost
For Wix Hosting and purchasing a Domain, that adds up to $237 NZD per year.
Additionally, if you want a business email, that will cost you around another $9 per month.
So in total, that's $345 NZ Dollars a year for a Wix site - that's not cheap!
Wix vs Hiring a Web Designer - Costs
Compare using Wix to hiring a web designer where you can use your own domain/hosting provider. The costs are only around $150-$200 per year, after paying your designer their one-off fee to build the website for you. Wix Website Design Challenges
If you are using Wix to create your website, then you will need to spend time designing the website and uploading all your page content. Not to mention, Wix's DIY builder can be quite hard to use if you are trying to customise your site with a specific layout. Then there is the issue of responsiveness. While your Wix site may look great on your computer, it is not completely responsive for all mobiles and tablet sizes. This is important, as vistors to your website may be using different devices, and you want your site to look great no matter what device someone is using, right? Wix websites can also be slow loading too, which is another thing to be aware of.
